Craps Rules, Tips, Strategy

Craps

Craps rules

Short Description of craps
The first roll of the dice in a craps round is called the "come out roll". The basic opening bet in craps, which is placed just before the come out roll, is called the "pass line bet." Pass line bets are instant winners when the shooter's come out roll is 7 or 11, and lose when the come out roll is 2 (snake eyes), 3 (cross eyes), or 12 (box cars). If 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 are rolled on the come out roll, that number becomes "the point". The puck labeled "ON" shows that the point has been established, and is located on the craps table over the box for the number rolled as the point: "4, 5, six, 8, nine, or 10".
To end a round of craps and resolve pass line bets, the shooter must roll either the point or 7 after the come out roll. There's always a possibility that a craps game can continue all night if the shooter fails to roll the point or 7. Pass line bets can't win until the point is rolled, and can't lose until 7 is rolled. Because unresolved pass line bets may not be removed, players must wait for a roll of the point or 7 to determine the outcome of their pass line bets.

The Different Craps Bets
Before the dice are rolled, bets can be placed in various fields of the craps table. First, using your left mouse button, click on the value of the chip you wish to wager. Next, place the chip in the desired betting area on the craps table by clicking in the area using your left mouse button again. Should you wish to alter or remove a bet, click on your wagered chips with your right mouse button. Please note that some bets may not be removed. Once you have finish placing your bets, click on the "ROLL" button to roll the dice.

Pass Line Bets
A pass line bet is placed on the field labeled "PASS LINE" on the craps table before the come out roll (i.e. the first roll of the dice in a new craps round). A wager on the pass line wins if the come out roll is 7 or 11, and loses if 2, 3 or 12 is rolled. If 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 are rolled, that number becomes "the point." To win a pass line bet, the shooter must roll the point again before rolling a 7. If the shooter rolls a 7 before rolling the point again, your pass line bet loses. A winning pass line bet pays even money (1 to 1). Once the point has been established, unresolved pass line bets may not be removed or reduced. They must be resolved by a roll of the point or 7.

Don't Pass Line Bets
A don't pass line bet is essentially the reverse of a pass line bet, and is placed on the craps table in the "DON'T PASS BAR" before the come out roll. If the shooter rolls 2 or 3 on the come out roll, a don't pass line bet wins. However, if the come out roll is 7 or 11, don't pass line bets lose. If the come out roll is 12, a don't pass line bet is returned to the player in a push. If the come out roll is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, that number becomes the point. Once the point has been established, don't pass line bets win if the shooter rolls a 7 before rolling the point again. If the shooter rolls the point again before rolling a 7, don't pass line bets lose. A winning don't pass line bet pays even money (1 to 1). Unlike pass line bets, unresolved don't pass line bets may be removed or reduced. To remove this bet click the right mouse button. If you have placed an odds bet as well, a single right button click will remove the odds bet, and an additional click will remove the don't pass line bet.

Come Bets
A come bet is placed in the "COME" bar on the craps table before any roll of the dice, once the point has been established by the come out roll. The rules for come bets are essentially the same as pass line bets. Come bets win if the shooter's next roll is 7 or 11, and lose if the roll is 2, 3, or 12. If the shooter rolls 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, that number becomes "the come point," and the dealer will move the come bet from the "COME" bar on the craps table to the box corresponding to the come point: "4, 5, six, 8, nine, or 10". If the shooter rolls the come point again before rolling a 7, the come bet pays even money. The come bet will stay in place until the come point or a 7 is rolled. Similarly to the pass line bet, unresolved come bets may not be removed or reduced. They must be resolved by a roll of the come point or 7.

Don't Come Bets
A don't come bet is essentially the opposite of a come bet, which is placed after the come out roll in the "DON'T COME" bar on the craps table. Don't come bets win when the shooter's next roll is 2 or 3, and lose if the roll is 7 or 11. If the shooter rolls a 12, the bet will be returned to the player in a push. If the roll is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, that number becomes "the come point," and the dealer will move the don't come bet from the "Don't Come Bar" to the left corner of the narrow, uppermost bar over the box corresponding to the come point: "4, 5, six, 8, nine, or 10". After the come point is established, don't come bets win even money if 7 is rolled and lose if the come point is rolled. Don't come bets will stay in place until the come point or a 7 is rolled. However, unresolved don't come bets may be removed.

Odds Bets
An "odds" bet is a "back up" bet on an original pass line bet, don't pass line bet, come bet, or don't come bet. The maximum odds bet is 3 times your original bet.

Pass Line Odds Bets
After the point has been established, a pass line odds bet is placed by clicking the left mouse button on the craps table outside the "PASS LINE" bar, under your original pass line bet. A winning pass line odds bet pays true odds: 2 to 1 on a roll of 4 or 10, 3 to 2 on a roll of 5 or 9, and 6 to 5 on a roll of 6 or 8. Unlike the original pass line bet, an unresolved pass line odds bet may be removed.

Don't Pass Line Odds Bets
Once the point has been established, a don't pass line odds bet is placed by clicking your left mouse button anywhere on the "DON'T PASS BAR" area. A winning don't pass line odds bet pays true odds: 1 to 2 on a roll of 4 or 10, 2 to 3 on a roll of 5 or 9, and 5 to 6 on a roll of 6 or 8. An unresolved don't pass line odds bet may be removed. Clicking the right mouse button will remove the bet.

Come Odds Bets
Once the come point has been established, a come odds bet is placed by clicking your left mouse button directly under your come bet within the box that corresponds to the come point: "4, 5, six, 8, nine, or 10". A winning come odds bet pays true odds: 2 to 1 on a roll of 4 or 10, 3 to 2 on a roll of 5 or 9, and 6 to 5 on a roll of 6 or 8. Unlike the original come bet, an unresolved come odds bet may be removed.

Don't Come Odds Bets
Once the come point has been established, an odds bet is placed on your don't come bet by clicking in the space directly under your don't come bet within the narrow, uppermost bar. This bar is above the box that corresponds to the come point: "4, 5, six, 8, nine, or 10". A winning don't come odds bet pays true odds: 1 to 2 on a roll of 4 or 10, 2 to 3 on a roll of 5 or 9, and 5 to 6 on a roll of 6 or 8. An unresolved don't come odds bet may be removed.

Field Bets
A field bet is a bet that the next roll of the dice will be 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12. It is placed in the "FIELD" bar on the craps table before any roll of the dice. If the next roll is 3, 4, 9, 10 or 11, the field bet wins even money. If 2 is rolled, the field bet wins 2 to 1. If 12 is rolled, the field bet wins 3 to 1. If 5, 6, 7, or 8 is rolled, the field bet is lost.

Big 6 and Big 8 Bets
A big 6 bet is a bet that 6 will be rolled before 7. Equally, a big 8 bet is a bet that 8 will be rolled before 7. A big 6 or a big 8 bet is placed in either the "6" or "8" box which is located in the left corner of the craps table. A big 6 or big 8 bet wins even money if the shooter rolls a 6 or 8 before rolling 7. Unresolved Big 6 and big 8 bets may be removed.

Place Bets
There are two types of place bets:
A place win bet is a bet that either 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 will be rolled before a 7. A place win bet is placed in the narrow, unlabeled bar located just under the box with the corresponding number on the craps table: "4, 5, six, 8, nine, or 10". Winning place win bets are paid according to the following ratios: 7 to 6 on numbers 6 and 8, 7 to 5 on numbers 5 and 9, and 9 to 5 on numbers 4 and 10.
A place lose bet is a bet that 7 will be rolled before either 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. A place lose bet is placed in the right-hand side of the narrow, unlabeled bar located just above the box with the corresponding number on the craps table: "4, 5, six, 8, nine, or 10". Winning place lose bets are paid according to the following ratios: 4 to 5 on numbers 6 and 8, 5 to 8 on numbers 5 and 9, and 5 to 11 on numbers 4 and 10.

Buy Bets
A buy bet is a bet that either 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 will be rolled before 7. A buy bet is placed in the box (labeled "BUY") corresponding to the number on the craps table: "4, 5, six, 8, nine, or 10". A vigorish (vig.) of 5% is charged on your profit from this bet. Buy bet winnings are then paid at true odds: 6 to 5 on numbers 6 and 8, 3 to 2 on numbers 5 and 9, and 2 to 1 on numbers 4 and 10.

Lay Bets
A lay bet is essentially the reverse of a buy bet. A lay bet is a bet that 7 will be rolled before 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. The lay bet is placed in the top bar (labeled "LAY") above the box corresponding to the number on the craps table: "4, 5, six, 8, nine, or 10". A vigorish (vig.) of 5% is charged on your profit from this bet. Lay bet winnings are then paid at true odds: 5 to 6 on numbers 6 and 8, 2 to 3 on numbers 5 and 9, and 1 to 2 on numbers 4 and 10. Unresolved lay bets may be removed.

Any 7 Bets
An "any 7" bet is a bet that the next roll of the dice will be a 7. It is placed on any roll of the dice in the "SEVEN" field on the craps table. If 7 is rolled, you win 4 times your bet.

Any Craps Bets
An "any craps" bet is a bet that the next roll of the dice will be 2, 3, or 12. It is placed on any roll of the dice in the "ANY CRAPS" field on the craps table. If 2, 3, or 12 is rolled, you win 7 times your bet.

Horn Bets
A horn bet is a bet that the next roll of the dice will be either 2, 3, 11, or 12. It is placed on any roll of the dice in the box on the craps table containing the two illustrated dice that add up to either 2, 3, 11, or 12. A winning horn bet pays 15 to 1 on numbers 3 and 11 and 30 to 1 on numbers 2 and 12.

Hardway Bets
A hardway bet is a bet that the shooter will roll either a 4, 6, 8, or 10 as doubles (2+2, 3+3, 4+4, or 5+5) before rolling a 7. The hardway bet is placed in the box on the craps table containing the two illustrated dice corresponding to the number. Rolling a number by doubles is said to be rolling the number "the hard way." For example, a roll of 4+4 is a called a "hard 8," while a roll of 5+3 or 6+2 is called an "easy 8." A winning hardway bet pays 7 to 1 on numbers 4 and 10 and 9 to 1 on numbers 6 and 8. If you roll an "easy" before rolling a "hard" you lose your bet. Unresolved hardway bets may be removed.

Online Craps Strategies

There are many methods used to beat the game of online craps but not a single one is capable of doing this in the long run. However your long run craps strategy will help improve your play, hence reducing the overall exposure to the house edge making it possible for your craps strategy to work. Maybe they'll work for you or maybe they won't - it's gambling after all. Only several of these methods are worth mentioning. (We mention several general online craps strategies below).

5-Count This method aims at improving the quality of shooters you're betting on. Will help you select the possibly hot players while dump the others. Here's how this craps strategy works: the new shooter is on the come-out roll. If he / she throws a point (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) that's Count 1. If not you wait until the player does this and then start counting. Count 2, 3, 4 will follow after Count 1 no matter what the player rolls. To achieve Count 5 the player must throw again a point (the counting is stopped until this happens). The fact you reached Count 5 makes this player a hot one. Begin betting.

Hedge Betting The Hedge Betting craps strategy consists of placing a bet that almost entirely cancels out another one. Almost any roll will bring you profit (a small one, but a profit) in online craps. You'll lose when the dice roll is not covered by the hedge bet. Besides the fact you get to play online craps longer because your bets have now a smaller risk, this method will substantially increase your comps (complimentaries offered by the online casino). Almost any bet can be turned into a hedge bet. For example, a pass line bet can be hedged from craps (2, 3, 12) by betting the proposition bet any craps. More, you can make place bets before the come out and hedged them by the pass line bet.

Progressive Betting This is a very simple craps strategy. So you have placed your online craps bet. Each dice roll you win your wager you will increase the current bet by that initial one. Every time you lose you'll bet the current amount minus the initial one. As long as you are winning you will continue to raise your bets and when you start losing you'll bet the same bets but in a descending order.

Anything But Seven Objective of this craps strategy: To win on any number thrown except a Seven. Don't place any bets on the Don't Pass or Pass Line, but wait until a point has been established. Place two units on 5, 6, & 8. Place one unit on the Field. Results: This method is a little riskier than the previous online craps strategies, since your total monetary risk is: $39.00. Therefore, it is suggested that you remove all bets after three rolls. Should the shooter hold the dice for at least three rolls, you will stand to win anything from $15.00-$27.00(more if the numbers 2 or 12 are rolled).

Craps Tips

1. Taking over or buying player Don't bets This is a bet that very few people know about. It is the only way to get a mathematical edge at craps. Often wrong bettors will place don't pass and/or don't come bets that wind up on the six or eight.

For a don't bettor, the most dangerous part of the game is trying to get up on the number since he has to buck the appearance of the seven and 11 to do so. But once up on the numbers, the don't bettor has the best of it because he is now rooting for the seven, which has six chances of appearing in 36 possible combinations of two six sided dice.

The six and eight can each be made five ways. So if you are up on the don't six, you have six ways to win (on the number seven) and five ways to lose. When the bet is $10 you would win $60, lose $50, and be ahead by $10 after the 11 decisions (on average). If you see a don't player about to take his bet down just say to the fellow: "Don't! Here's 10 bucks, you're even!" He'll take the $10 because that's what his bet is.

Now the bet is yours and you have a nice six to five edge! If the player is betting $15 or more on the don't, you can even offer to "buy" the number by giving him $16, instead of $15. He makes a profit and so will you (in the long run). On 11 decisions of $15 you will win $90, lose $75 plus $11 for buying the bet and come out ahead by $4.

As the amount on the don't bet increases, you will still probably be able to buy the bet for $1 because the don't player was willing to take it back with no gain. Of course, there will be wild swings even when you have this slight edge, but playing an edge is always better than playing without an edge.

2. The Oddsman's bet Many players who make pass line bets can't afford to take any odds or full odds behind the bet once the number is established. You can place the odds if the person allows you. The casino has no edge on the odds and in the long run your expectation is to break even. That could be a lot of casino fun with no expected cost! One caveat: Make sure the person behind whose bet you're taking odds fully understands what it is you are doing. You don't want to win a bet only to have the man or woman scoop it up and keep it.

3. Don't pass with odds or don't come with odds Always put the least allowed on the don't pass or don't come and the most in odds behind it. The house has a 1.403 percent edge on the don't pass and don't come bets, but no edge on the odds bets.

4. Pass with odds or Come with odds The same advice applies to this bet, which comes in with a 1.414 percent edge on the pass line and the come but no edge on the odds portion of the bets.

5. Place the six or eight to win In multiples of $6, placing the six or eight is the only worthwhile place-to-win bet on the table as the casino has a rather reasonable 1.52 percent. You'll be paid $7 for your $6 bet when the number hits.

6. Place the six or eight to lose You place $5 on the table and say: "Six (or eight) to lose." If the seven shows, you win $4. The house edge is 1.82 percent.

7. Lay four or ten Place $41 on the table and say: "Lay against the four (or 10)." If you win, you get $20. The house edge is 2.44 percent.

8. Place the five or nine to lose You throw down $8 and place the five or nine to lose. If the seven shows you win $5. The house edge is 2.5percent.

9. Buy the four or ten for $35 or $39 (paying $1 commission) Normally the placing of the four or 10 has a hefty house edge of 6.67 percent which makes it one of the worst bets on the craps table. However, the casino usually lets you "buy" the number by paying a $1 commission if you are betting $20 or $25. However, the Captain has bought the four and 10 for $35 paying that $1 commission, which reduces the house edge to 2.78 percent, and he has also has been able to buy the four for $39 for the same one dollar commission.

This letter bet reduces the house edge to 2.5 percent. It still isn't a good bet but, it's a heck of a lot better than just placing it. Of course, you have to be able to afford it. Some casinos allow you to buy the four and only the pay the commission if it wins. This is another wonderful way to reduce the house edge on an otherwise bad bet.

10. The Field (if it pays triple on either the 2 or 12) Usually the Field is not a good bet to make. But when the 2 or 12 is returning three to one instead of the usual two to one, the house edge drops to a more tolerable 2.78 percent.
